I appreciate the editorial by Drs Simpson, Yarris, and Carek. I have always viewed it as my responsibility to ensure that all residents leave my program better consumers of medical literature and able to apply recent findings in their clinical practice. Therefore, from my perspective, they would fulfill the definition of “scholarly physicians.” Although we have a large number of residents who produce or contribute to scholarship, I do not feel this is the metric to which we or our residents should be held. Logistically it would be a Herculean task to ensure that all 14 residents in each of my classes produce scholarly work within our 36-month curriculum.
